OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1857, Emporia serves as the Lyon County seat. The city is widely known for its newspaper, the Emporia Gazette. Edited and published by the legendary news man William Allen White, the Emporia Gazette is often regarded as the gold standard for small-town newspapers.

Preserving the William Allen White residence, Red Rocks National Historic Site is Emporia’s most famous tourist destination. Emporia was also the location for the first ever observance of Veterans Day, which took place in 1953.

On average, Emporia enjoys 210 days of sunshine each year. High temperatures in July reach 92 degrees, with January lows tumbling to around 20. Annual rainfall is approximately 34 inches, while yearly snow accumulation is roughly 17 inches.
